This week’s guest is Andrew Kolb. We talk about his Role-Playing Settings of Oz (city point crawl), Neverland (hex crawl) and his latest Wonderland (dungeon crawl) where he pulls from the surreal and silly collage art of people like Terry Gilliam. We talk about how all the Lewis Carroll characters are agro with Alice, and making their stat blocks and special moves (inspired by his love of Chrono Trigger). The locations as topsy-turvy geometric block shapes, and building out their themes.
We also discuss his brightly illustrated Mab Graves’ Drawlloween challenge books Booburgh, the cutest little monster town where he designed each storefront to look like what it’s selling inside, and Necronomicorp, a catalog of creepy & cute products that mimic the big box stores that wreak havoc in small towns like Booburgh.
MD 402 – Pizza Queen w/ Andrew Kolb
Pizza Queen is a large, blobby, alien xeno professional wrestler who’s made entirely out of pizza. She has a second face on her torso that fires out a hot pizza pie that causes fire and bludgeoning damage. That pizza then stands up as one of the three minions (see below).
When a fight starts, she casts calzone effect, which summons crust from the Earth to create a pizza-dome battle arena around herself and all combatants.
Deep Dish: She secretes hot grease making her difficult to grab. The grease will constantly flow, filling the enclosed calzone.
Side of Marinara: Those within three feet of Pizza Queen, must roll to avoid being sprayed in the eyes with hot marinara. If you take damage, save or be blinded for 1d4 rounds.
The Supreme: When there are five pizza minions, Pizza Queen immediately does a call and response with her minions. She yells “snicker” and they yell back “snack.” Then together they form a massive pizza-amalgamation, doubling her size, hit points and damage. Pizza attacks do double damage and minions are twice as big.
Pizza minion wrestling warriors:
1) Pepperoni & Dynamite Pie: Explodes when it hits you causing 10 feet of splash damage. If Pizza Queen misses it becomes an animated pizza wrestler with a spicy attitude and has the move “The TNT Stunner.”
2) Laser-Mushrooms Pie: Fires like a chakram weapon with a mushroom-powered laser edge. If hit, there’s a 10% chance to lose 1d4 fingers. It becomes an animated pizza yogi that strikes with gooey, stretching appendages.
3) Hawaiian Pie: When hit, this pineapple and ham pizza charms or repulses the target with fear, depending on their feelings about Hawaiian pizza. It becomes animate and performs a hypno-hula-dance. It will put a molten cheese lei around the neck of those under its thrall, or a burnt-tongue kiss that’ll burn the roof of your mouth.
